Best HTC Vive games, apps & experiences

HTC Vive games and apps you should try

The world of VR is rapidly growing and with every single major company looking to out do each other and come up with the best virtual reality headset, it becomes difficult for people to decide on one. HTC’s attempt at a VR headset, the HTC Vive, is a rock solid virtual reality headset that offers solid performance for the price.

While most people would not see the benefit or appeal in purchasing a virtual reality headset, it creates a new dynamic in the way one experiences games, movies, and applications in general. The highly immersive experience makes it something that everyone should try out although it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

HTC Vive games

The fact that virtual reality is still in its infancy means that there are not many apps available for it. Many are very clunky and not well thought out. Despite this, there are many great games and apps available for VR headsets and the HTC Vive in particular. We have taken the priority of listing out these HTC Vive games for you so you do not have to go hunting endlessly for them.

Here are some of the games you should get:

Fallout 4 & Doom

Both games, due for release on VR in 2017, are a must have for any games. Fallout 4 will bring the post-apocalyptic wasteland to the virtual space and judging by how massively popular the console game was, the VR spin on this could prove to be even more popular. It is not known at this stage weather this will only be a portion of the game or the entire game. Regardless, this is one to look out for.
Doom, also created by Bethesda Studios, promises to give you the most realistic experience of hell. It is an extremely gory first-person shooter that takes place in their imagination of hell battling endless hordes of demons and god knows what else. This definitely not for the fainthearted.

War Thunder

Ever wanted to pilot a warplane during the heat of war? I certainly have not, but for those who have War Thunder is definitely for you. War Thunder puts you right into the firing line, piloting a warplane in world war 2. This makes it very unique and gives you the exhilaration of fighting from the skies in a war.

Vanishing Realms

Vanishing Realms

Vanishing Realms is a fantasy VR game that gives you the chance to kill skeletons with a sword. What more could you ask for? The game mechanics are great to use and fighting is surprisingly great. Fighting off monsters ad defeating bosses in the game make for a great experience. This coupled with a captivating story and great gameplay makes Vanishing Realms a worthy addition to this list.

Hover Junkers

Hover Junkers

Hover Junkers is a unique combat and flying game which allows you to choose a ship, which is based on whatever the size of your room is and defend your ship. It is insanely fun to play and the fact that your ship is basically your entire room makes it unique compared to other combat games around. There are various stages, playable characters, and weapons available to you giving your more options than most other combat games. Hover Junkers is a unique game and are worth checking out if you have a VR.

Job Simulator

Job Simulator

Despite the boring sounding name, Job Simulator is a really fun game. As the name suggests, it puts you in the shoes of different types of professions such as Auto Mechanic, Gourmet Chef, Store Clerk and Office Worker. It is, of course, a massive exaggeration of these professions and gives you a variety of tasks to complete. How you complete these tasks is completely up to you. It is deceptively simple and can even frustrate you at times. Despite this, it is a fresh take on this concept which makes for a fun and unique VR experience.

HTC Vive apps

While the HTC Vive and many other virtual reality headsets were primarily made for gaming, they can also be used for productivity and work. While this may sound trivial and one would not expect to use it for such things, there are times when they become very useful and can aid in whatever it is you are doing.

With that in mind, here are a few of the best apps available for the HTC Vive:

Tilt Brush

Tilt Brush is an extremely fun app to try out. It allows you to paint and draw all sorts of things in beautiful virtual reality. This can be very useful for artistic people or people who would like to create things in virtual settings to get a sense of what the end product would be like. This creates a new dynamic for artists as they can create all sorts of masterpieces which might not have been possible with 2D drawings. Architects and the like could also use this app for testing out ideas and sketches. If none of these things apply to you the app is still worth trying out as it gives you tons of brushes, colors, and tools to experiment and play around with.

Virtual Desktop

One of my most favorite VR applications by a long shot, Virtual Desktop does what you would expect from the name. It allows you to use your computer in full 360-degree virtual reality. This allows you to have total privacy when using your computer and also changes the dynamic of using your computer with a normal monitor. It lets you use the internet, watch videos and movies, use desktop applications and even play some desktop games. There are many other features and uses for it but this gives us a glimpse into the future of computing without monitors.

Lecture VR (Engage)

Lecture VR is more aimed at students and people looking to study. Lecture VR allows you to explore museums, hold lectures with other and join other lectures. Once again this gives us a glimpse at a future in which one would not need to go to college. Instead, everything would be taught through virtual reality.

Engage on Steam

Those are a few of the best experiences the HTC Vive has to offer as of now. This list will get much larger as time goes by and virtual reality becomes more mainstream. This is, however, a very encouraging sign and it makes us excited to see what the future holds for virtual reality.
